Exploring Treatment Options for Knee Pain

July 26, 2023

Knee pain is a common complaint that impacts one’s quality of life, causing discomfort and limiting mobility.

Although knee pain is most common in older people, anyone can experience them at any age. There are a few reasons why it might happen, such as sprained ligaments or muscles, torn cartilage, tendonitis, or arthritis.

Various treatments are available for knee pain, but they vary depending on the cause of pain and the degree of discomfort.

Conservative Approaches

Individuals experiencing mild knee pain may get relief from conservative treatments like rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). These can help reduce inflammation and provide temporary pain relief.

Medications

When a conservative approach does not work, medications are often recommended for relief. Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can give temporary relief. Doctors may also prescribe something for specific pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis or gout.

Injections

Injections can be an effective option for managing knee pain as it can be delivered directly to your joints. Some examples of injected medications are corticosteroids for arthritis flare, hyaluronic acid to improve mobility and pain, and Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which can promote healing.

Therapy

Strengthening exercises can help muscles around your knee become stronger. Physical therapy may also be recommended depending on the condition caused by pain.

Athletes that encounter knee pain, for example, need specific exercises that help with practicing the mobility required to perform their sport.

It is important to note that not all treatments are suitable for everyone. It is essential to still speak with a doctor so they can assess your health needs and medical history to determine the best course of action to alleviate knee pain.

When to see a Doctor?

If you are experiencing severe knee pain after an accident or have been dealing with pain for several days already, consult a doctor to get the proper treatment.
