Addressing The Ever-Rising Opioid Crisis

March 28, 2022

According to recent reports, the opioid crisis continues to devastate individuals and their families across the country. More than 100,000 lives were lost last year to drug overdoses, with a large percentage attributable to illicit or adulterated fentanyl, a synthetic opioid.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the situation. During this time, drug overdose numbers have increased nationwide. Beyond drug enforcement, the medical community, social service organizations, affected individuals and their families view increased access to care without unnecessary delays as the key ingredient for saving lives.

OUD impacts everyone

Keep in mind that opioid-use disorder (OUD), whether it involves illicit or prescription drugs, is a widespread problem affecting the young and old from all walks of life. While it’s often identified as an issue among younger adults, researchers have found between the years 1999 and 2019, close to 80,000 adults aged 55 and older nationwide have died from an opioid overdose
